The Woodland Beaver Pond produces huge amounts of food, including dragonflies, for cavity nesting birds.
In July, Brett Harrison used a spotting scope and binoculars to locate cavities among the snags that stand tall in the Beaver Pond in order to study the birds that nest in these cavities. He also documented the flight patterns of the birds. As the young cavity nesters fledged, the pond became a feeding area for Broad-winged Hawks and Merlins. The Beaver dam is an excellent spot to observe this interaction.
As part of this study Brett also prepared a banding lane, erected mist nests,
monitored them, and banded area nesters.
