Eagle Updates for 2013

After 2 reports of eagles sitting on the nest in early May, we were concerned they might not be successful in producing young this year due to the cold and late spring. However, when we arrived on the 1st of June, we spotted two eaglets in the nest. One was already considerably larger than the other and was already quite demanding and aggressive at feeding time. The eaglets were banded on the 19th and as suspected the larger and older of the two was a female and the smaller a male.

For several weeks, the larger eaglet dominated mealtimes with the smaller eaglet getting less or no food at some feedings as the larger eaglet always seemed to be fed first by the adults. (This can be seen in the videos below.) The smaller eaglet did get enough to survive and put up a good struggle to get enough food; however, just as the larger eaglet fledged, the smaller male appears to have fallen or been bumped out of the nest. An eaglet was seen standing on the lakeside near the nest tree, but at the time it was assumed to be the recently fledged female. Later, it was found to have been the male. He had died there since he was not yet ready to fly, was not attended to by the adults, and had no way of getting food on his own.
